Weekend with Tina

Tina came over this weekend to just get away from it all. It was great to see her and we had a really good weekend. Yesterday I did yoga in the morning at my Iyengar yoga class and then rushed to the ferry to get her. We met my parent's (who had just returned from Mexico the night before) and my aunt downtown at the cruise ship terminal as my mum was about to head out on an Alaskan cruise with some friends herself. We sent off my mum and then had lunch with my Dad and Aunt. It was nice to catch up with them as I haven't seen my aunt in a while and it seems like the same for my dad. They had a great time in Mexico and will likely return many times.
Tina and I spent the day shopping and I tried on a million pairs of pants. I wanted so many beautiful things from OQOQO but I was only looking for pants for work :( After numerous pairs and several shopping malls, I decided that the best pants were those ones from Club Monaco that are made of viscose. I couldn't help it, nothing fit quite as well. But I have tracked down the head office of Club Monaco and am drafting them a letter to send to request that they consider using fabrics with less of an environmental impact. I feel bad, but I can't afford to buy only organic/sustainable clothing and there just isn't enough choice right now. But I want to work on that. I will right letters to companies and find out as much as possible. I am considering applying for OQOQO as well or volunteering there to help them achieve their goals. I definitely need to something and I hope I find it.
Anyways, Tina bought two things from OQOQO so that made me feel better and she got some shoes and a clutch too! We didn't get home until close to 9pm! What a day.
Today we tackled the Chief in Squamish. We hiked to the second peak as I've only done the 3rd and the 2nd was supposed to be shorter. Near the top we had to use metal chain ropes to pull ourselves up these cliffs and had to climb a ladder. But the view from the top was incredible! We could see Squamish and the inlet and the mountains around us. It was such a perfect day and many times over worth the hike up there. Coming down was hard on the knees and we had to do some rappelling like things too which I was very proud of Tina for doing as she hates rappelling. It took us about 3 hours to do and by the time we got back home we had a "quick" dinner at Whitespot and I took Tina to the 7pm ferry. Now I'm back home by myself but Ty says he will be back home Tuesday sometime.
Tomorrow I need to pick up some art supplies at Opus for my drawing class on Tuesday at Shadbolt! I'm excited about it! And I get to pick up my new pants tomorrow too. I hope everyone else had as great a weekend as I did. I love this weather and hope it stays a while longer! Next weekend we are thinking about doing the Lion's - we'll see!

Alaska Cruise Cont.

Day 5: Skagway
I think I liked Skagway the best. It was a quaint little town and kind of reminded me of something like Saltspring Island. We took a city bus to the end of town and then wandered back. We went into some cute little shops that weren't the typical "Alaska T-Shirt Shop" touristy stores, but were actually run by the artists themselves. Very cool. But not too much to see in town and we avoided the tourist traps.
We had an early lunch on the ship and then braved the rain and headed for our train to do our one tour booked through Princess. We took the Whitepass Yukon Railway train up through the Whitepass and into Canada. There the train stopped for a while and let other trains pass and we reversed and headed down the mountain. It was amazing to see how narrow and step of path the goldrushers/stampeders had to cart all their supplies on and how many risks they took just for a faint hope of gold. It was a beautiful ride and I think my Grandma also enjoyed it.
I went to the gym that afternoon while we were still in Skagway and it was cool to be running on the treadmill looking out at the town.

Day 6: Glacier Bay
We arrived at Glacier Bay very early in the morning. My Grandma and I got up at about 6am to eat an early breakfast and head on up to the Skywalker's lounge on the 16th floor to get a great view. We snagged some comfy seats right at a window that hung out from the side of the ship and stayed there pretty much all morning. The views were great and the glaciers pretty cool. I ran outside for some pictures of the tidewater glaciers up close. The rangers got on board when we entered the bay and were giving us some commentary as well. We saw some brown bears that just looked like specks on the hillside and not many other living things around. I liked seeing the ice floating in the water the best - that was so neat! It was beautiful and amazing to think about the geology and what these things could really do, but once you've looked at it for a bit it gets kind of monotonous. Oh well. It was a very nice relaxing day.
We left Glacier Bay around 3pm and then we decided to go for tea. I just wanted tea, but I should have known. We were overloaded with treats and sandwiches and cakes and so much stuff. We tried to resist, but the staff would say oh just try this one. So we were a little full after that and I think I headed back to the gym again while my grandma relaxed and napped.
That night was the second formal dinner and everyone was once again all fancied up. We ha dmade reservations as we heard it was a lobster dinner and would be popular. We had dinner at 8pm in our favourite restaurant, the Pacific Moon and had a nice table fairly close to the window. We did indeed get lobster - they cooked it in the shell, brought it to the table like that and then took it out of the shell for us! That's the way lobster should be served, not quite as messy that way. It was delicious and I think we finished off a bottle of wine that night as well. I heard some good stories from grandma about her life before and during coming to Canada and also later too. I just need to get a little alcohol in Grandma and great stories come out. I just hope I can remember them all - I tried to retell them to Tyler as he has a much better memory than I.
It was a beautiful day and very romantic in it's own way.

Day 7: College Fjord and Whittier
It was a long trip from Glacier Bay north to College Fjord near Whittier and Anchorage. We didn't arrive until the afternoon but it was great as well. We managed to get the closest to Harvard Glacier that the Diamond Princess had all season so that was a wonderful view. We saw some pieces of ice calve off into the ocean too.
That was the last day and we relaxed nicely. It was sad to pack up our luggage and place it outside our room before dinner though.
Our last dinner was fantastic. They treated us so well and seated us in a great booth by the window. We obviously had the best waiters and the head waiter kept coming over to make sure everything was excellent. We must have made an impression as some point, which wasn't too hard as I was probably the youngest non-child passenger aboard and we didn't see anyone else with just a grandmother and granddaughter together. Or maybe they liked my smile. Either way, it got us good service. And it was a fantastic night. Maybe it was this night that we finished off the bottle of wine, or maybe both. :)
The next morning we were to get off the ship at 6:45 to catch our bus to the airport in Anchorage. Things were a little slow getting off, but once we were on the bus we thought we were on our way. Nope. You have to drive through a tunnel to get from Whittier to Anchorage and there is only one lane. You have to wait for all the other traffic to come through first, and then a train. We waited about 20mins (like waiting for the ferry) in line before we could go. And we had to stay a certain distance behind the bus in front of us as there are shelters along the way that only hold a certain number of people. This tunnel is literally carved right out of the mountain and isn't reinforced with anything but the mountain itself. It's only been recently that you could drive through it, originally it was for trains only. It was definitely an adventure.
On the bus after the tunnel we saw a couple moose on the side of the road. I also saw a buluga whale swimming in the ocean. More wildlife than we'd seen all trip!
The flight to Vancouver was uneventful and my Dad picked up my Grandma and Ty picked up me at the airport. Ty brought my computer so I could upload the pictures I had taken on my Dad's camera (his is better than mine, but I didn't realize those stupid dates were on so all my pictures have a red date and time stamp on them) and give it back to him so he could use it in Mexico the next week. It was nice to be home and see Tyler but I certainly didn't feel like cooking or doing much and I came down with a horrible cold Sunday that put me in bed until Wednesday when I finally went to work at my new job.

Thanks again Grandma for accepting the invitation and having a lovely time with me!

Pants!

So I promised myself if I got this QC/QA job that I would get to buy some nice pants. Well I did get it and I want pants. I found some beautiful pants at Club Monaco but they are $129! I really really like them but didn't want to spend $150 on pants. I wanted some nice natural fabric wool pants that are good quality. Well they are 24% wool and 70% viscose. I didn't know what viscose was so I asked the sales clerk - she had no idea. So I finally looked it up today and it is a natural polymer, but the way it's processed creates horrible pollutants and the main factory for it just recently shut down because of the pollution. So I guess that's a really good reason not to buy the pants. It's too bad stores like Club Monaco don't even think about things like that. I applaud stores like OQOQO and wish they made some nice dress pants. I'd definitely be willing to pay $129 for pants made here in Vancouver and with organic fabrics and dyes. Not so much willing to give my hard earned $129 to Club Monaco to continute the practice of polluting the environment and not even recognizing it.
Oh ya, and viscose = rayon so I guess the process of making rayon is also bad for the environment. Think about it next time you buy clothes!

People!!!

I promise I will finish my cruise posts soon, but right now I need to rant.
I am now working a 9-4:40 shift and I really like being able to stay up later and hang out with Tyler a little more. I've been getting up at 7am so giving myself an hour in the morning instead of the 30mins that I was giving myself. I like not having as much stress in the morning and I'm still home by 5:30 so not too bad. But the buses and skytrain are so much busier that one hour later. And days that's it has been raining have been especially bad this week. The skytrain immediately put me in a bad mood this morning - why can't people let you get off the train before they push their way on? It's not going to leave without them. And is it so hard to take your stupid backpacks off to create some more room? Ugh. The 99 B-line bus is always bad, they need way more buses running, but in the morning the lines are huge. That's okay, when people actually wait their turn to get on. But it seems like when it rains, people become very fearful of water and need to push onto the bus and not wait in line. There used to be transit staff standing there to make sure no one does that, but they don't seem to be there at 8:45, there were at 7:45 and 6:45, but I guess they don't work past 8am.
OK, that's my rant, I feel a little better but it has put me in a bad mood for the day. Hopefully I can come out of it. Breathe, relax, visualize the golden light.....

Alaska Cruise

Day 2: open sea
The second day was fairly uneventful. Mostly we ate and relaxed. We had pedicures donw at the spa, which was very nice except for them trying to sell us the expensive products. We did some reading and I started knitting my yoga mat bag with my Grandma's help. It was also the first formal night so we had to get all dressed up before heading for dinner.
Day 3: arriving in Ketchikan - Alaska's first city
We arrived early Monday morning in Ketchikan. We didn't have any tours planned so we took it easy and had a nice breakfast. We decided to walk around the town and even walked past all the tourist shops to see what the real town was like. It was a typical small town, but in a beautiful setting. Everything is right on the water as there is no road access to Ketchikan. Tons of sea planes everywhere. We did a bit of shopping at the Jade Shop before it started to rain fairly heavily so we went back to the ship for lunch and to watch us leave the town around 2pm. I went to the gym that day and tested out my orthotics on the treadmill and did some stretching etc. As usual, dinner was fantastic and we relaxed some more.
Day 4: Juneau
We hadn't booked any tours in Juneau either so didn't have to get off the ship too early. After breakfast we left and decided since it was a nice morning that we should go up the tram to the top of Mt. Roberts first thing. It was like going to the top of Grouse Mountain, but the view wasn't quite as good. We walked around a path up top and enjoyed being outside on a mountain. I think my Grandma liked it too cause she used to hike a lot and enjoys the outdoors. We walked around the shops but they were all the same as the ones in Ketchikan. Lunch was on the ship and then we went to Mendelhall Glacier on a bus tour included with the tram ticket we bought. It wasn't anything really spectacular, but it was interesting to talk to the ranger at the information centre there as the Mendenhall Glacier is one of the glaciers receeding the quickest. It just runs into a lake so we couldn't get too close to it. But the ranger did say they expect that in a couple of decades they won't be able to see it from the information centre!
Anyways, Juneau was all right - a slightly larger city of about 30,000 people and the capital of Alaska. Our bus driver was very entertaining and we learned a few random things about the town. Like when they got McDonald's for the first time and when they installed automatic doors on the grocery store and a bear walked right in! I think we spent some more time relaxing on the ship and watched us leave Juneau at 9pm from the Skywalkers lounge on the 16th floor enjoying some amaretto and brandy.

Alaska Cruise

So I plan on giving some details about my cruise, mostly for my own purposes to look back on later, so feel free to skip over this if you don't care.
Day 1 - Saturday September 2nd
Ty dropped us off in the parking lot below Canada Place and our luggage was whisked away. We went through security and were waiting in the line to get through customs when a Princess rep asked us if we had our cruise card. We didn't know what she was talking about and said no. She said that's okay we can just get it in a room off to the left after we cleared customs - so fine. BUT, when we got through customs a not so nice lady argued with us and told us we had to have our cruise cards and had to go back up the the Pan Pacific hotel to get them! She said it would be ok if I left my Grandma there and I went up to do that so that's what we did. Well when I got up there, the line up was as long as the entire building (along the sails). It was hours long. So I complained loud enough to some reps and got special treatment. It's a good thing that I did cause they needed my Grandma to sign a form saying that she hadn't been sick in the last few days because they were having Norwalk virus outbreaks. So I got taken to the front of the hours long line, got my credit card imprinted, signed my form, got my cruise card (room key and payment card) and then had to go back through security and customs with a Princess rep to get my Grandma to sign her form. It was completely ridiculous and took way longer than it should have. I felt bad for my Grandma, waiting for me and wondering what was taking so long. I have furious and it was not a great way to start a vacation.
I've got my travel agent sending a letter to Princess on my behalf and she is sending one as well. Hopefully we'll at least get an apology out of them. I was half expecting some sort of present in our rooms to say sorry for the delay (everyone else had to stand in huge line ups after travelling from afar), but there wasn't anything.
Well we eventually got on and watched from the top deck as we set sail from Vancouver. We sailed under the Lion's Gate Bridge and barely cleared it. It was a beautiful view of the city and we headed down to dinner after clearing the bridge.
We ate dinner with 3 other couples and it was delicious. The food was amazing for the entire cruise and the waitstaff were just as good. I pretty much had forgotten the difficulties of earlier in the day by the time I had dessert :)

Back from Alaska

Well we arrived safe and sound on Saturday from Anchorage. We managed to avoid getting Norwalk virus, but I came down with a cold last night and have spent all day today laying around hoping I will be better tomorrow. I've had chicken soup, jello and toast, so I must be sick.
I tried to post my pictures but the internet isn't working on my computer at the moment so maybe tomorrow. We had a great time and saw some beautiful scenary and glaciers, but it really just reminded us how great a place we live in here. Much of it was the same as here (except for Glacier Bay and College Fjord) and it made me want to do more here - like hiking and kayaking.
My Grandma had a great time and it was so nice to be pampered and relax for a week. The food was fantastic, we finished a few bottles of wine and bought a little bit of jade to support the Alaskan economy.
I like the small town of Skagway the best, it reminded me of Saltspring as most of the stores were run by the artists themselves and weren't big chains like "The Alaskan T-Shirt Company" in Juneau and Ketchikan.
The crew was great and were looking forward to heading to Mexico in a couple of weeks. The passengers were interesting to say the least - many from the southern US and not so young. I'm pretty sure I was the youngest person on board besides crew and the few children. Oh well. I'll post more later when I'm feeling better - off to bed for me now I think.

Almost gone

Today is my last day in sequencing. Tomorrow I'm off on my cruise for a week and when I return I will finally be in my QC/QA position. I found my desk and computer today and I will need to get a sweater to keep there as it's a tad chilly without a lab coat in the air conditioning on the 5th floor.
I was planning on being extra active and healthy this week as I plan on eating great food next week. I did the grind on Monday and then it all went downhill. I picked up my new orthotics Tuesday night and woke up with a very sore top of my left foot on Wednesday. I was thinking about doing the grind on my own on Wednesday, but my foot hurt too much to risk it. So I did 30min of yoga instead - not much but it got the blood flowing. I really feel great doing more yoga lately and I can feel the improvements every time. It's wonderful! Last night I fell asleep on the couch until Ty got home and we continued our "Prison Break" marathon in an attempt to get through last season before this new season is over. I wanted to stay up all night watching them but I knew I was too tired anyways.
Tonight I'm picking up my Grandma from the ferry and just finishing packing. Ty will drop us off at the cruise ship terminal at noon tomorrow and we depart at 4:30! We are on the Diamond Princess and we fly back next Saturday! I'm sure I will have some great pictures and stories when we get back.
Until then, enjoy the last good weekend of summer weather - it's rainy and cold where I'm going.
